Panama Darien Jungle Canopy Camp

Darien Jungle Extension at Canopy Camp - 6 days. Booked as an extension to Birds of Panama or on its own,

The province of Darien is revered for its incredible wildlife and blessed to have an immense expanse of protected rainforest in Darien National Park. It is one of the least visited and most valued areas for birding and wildlife watching in Central America. It is literally the end of the highway in Panama – the Pan-American Highway, which extends from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, with only one small gap between Panama and Colombia – the Darien Gap. The protected Darien jungle provides a stronghold for the Great Green Macaw, Great Curassow and the majestic Harpy Eagle, Panama’s national bird, as well as other endangered wildlife including Colombian Spider Monkey, Baird’s Tapir and America’s most powerful cat, the jaguar. However, Darien has suffered greatly from extensive deforestation throughout most of the province, as agriculture and cattle are the major sources of income for the people. Canopy Camp was established in this sensitive area to raise awareness of the potential that ecotourism has for Darien—creating a source of direct and indirect jobs and income for the local people, offering educational opportunities in the communities and promoting environmental conservation. The only tented ecolodge in eastern Panama, Canopy Camp has 8 full-size African Safari-style tents on raised platforms overlooking the vast landscape of rural Darien province and nearby Filo del Tallo Hydrological Reserve. In proper Canopy Family style, the open air dining room and lounge offer constant connection to nature – hummingbird feeders are buzzing with activity and platform feeders attract tanagers, butterflies and monkeys just meters away from the common space. Furthermore, the Canopy Camp gives access to some of the best birding that Darien has to offer. Hotel features: Free WiFi only in common areas and observation deck. NOTE: No air conditioning. Every tent has a large windows. 4 nights at Canopy camp. The standard tents occupy an area of 173 square feet (16 square meters) and have large windows on all sides with flaps that allow natural light and breeze to enter. They feature either 2 single beds or 1 Queen bed, two tables, a floor fan and overhead light, a solid plantation teak wood floor and a private bathroom just a few steps away from the entrance. All meals are included as are guided daily excursions.
